In another blog post, I brought up the topic of how the web is being “abstracted” into new mediums and devices such as Rich Internet Applications, netbooks and tablets (e.g. the iPad). After pondering this topic a little more, it hit me that that this concept might be a lot bigger than I initially thought, and deserving of an individual posting.

Apple fans have been hearing rumbling of the apple tablet, the completely flat fully functioning notebook computer, for years now. Apple released the iPhone, still no tablet. They released the Macbook Air but didn’t waste a breath on the tablet. Finally, after years of building it up, Apple is close to bringing it down to us. If you happened to be on CES or G4 that day, you might think it was Charlton Heston coming down the mountain with a certain stone tablet instead of the long awaited new gadget from Steve Jobs and Co. A couple weeks ago Macrabbit released the much anticipated Espresso 1.0 application. Its meant to rival the feature set of Panic’s Coda by being more or less a one stop shop for editing, uploading, and previewing Web files. Espresso doesn’t take on quite as much as Coda but what features they did do, they did with style.
It’s clear from the moment you open Espresso that the application is meant for web designers that code their own front ends. The sort of people that take good aesthetic design into their purchasing decisions. The welcome screen is a beautiful, albeit unnecessary, illustration…
