You can get great color results when creating a PDF if you embed the correct color profile. If you are planning to use the PDF mainly for the screen you will get best results from sRGB. If print quality is essential you will get best results from embedding the specific printer’s CMYK Postscript Printer Driver (PPD). How do you embed the PPD?
Using either Adobe Acrobat or Distiller you would go to the “Preferences->Color” panel. Choose sRGB in the RGB Working Space, and choose or “find” your printer’s PPD file. Most PPD files can be found from the manufacturer’s web site, or from your professional printer.
